No ifs, ands or buts

you may recall this post..
http://flporters.blogspot.com/2009/09/i-didnt-but-i-did.html

well this time...

I DID IT!!!

Turkey Trot 2009 was my first fully ran 5K.

Okay, okay so maybe a few ifs, like some people may have argued that it was just an exaggerated walk, but it was running for me, not stopping per my book. My time was 39:01, and I'll just proudly say that's a 12:30 pace...isn't it nice that you can snicker w/o me hearing you? For me though that time was good.

Brandon and the kids were there to welcome me. Later I asked Cole, when I was running into the finish line was I running superfast, medium or slow (in comparison to how I had been running all along it felt like I was a freight train)..Cole very lovingly said ...medium (better than slow I suppose). I thought I was going to die at the end when I was running medium.

Here's the cool thing though, at the two mile mark I was ready to cross over to the 10k lane and the race seemed short (you know at the end), so even though the week before I said I was never running again after the race, I may have a little fever now. Like can I better my time on the 5k? Can I go for the 10? Will I be in next year's Boston Marathon - okay one too far.

I couldn't have done it w/o Rachel...and her persistence, thanks Rach!

And guess what?

cue Rocky Theme

there were hills, only two but one was kind of steep. Next year I will concur those hills in Indianhead. Aren't you glad you can sing the Rocky theme song w/o me hearing you ;)!!!!

Don't hate the beauty in these pics!

Beautiful Things - Giving Thanks

In Sacrament meeting on Sunday six year old Emma T. sang this song, it's very simple but such a nice way to express a love of the beautiful things we have on this Earth and above. I am so thankful for the many beautiful things this life has to offer.

On a side note I have an "Edward" crush (I didn't catch the Twilight fever and feel a little left out, so here's mine) on the composer of this song...never laid eyes on him :).

1. Blue skies, mountains, rainbows, fountains:
These are some things I love to see.
Rivers, canyons, pine trees, oceans:
Heavenly Father made them for me.

[Chorus]Life is o’erflowing with beautiful things
Made by our loving and glorious King.
If I but strive to be grateful and true,
I can be happy in all that I do.

2. Music, laughter, peace thereafter:
These are some things I love to hear.
Please’s, thank you’s, may I’s, can do’s:
Hearing them fills my heart with good cheer.

Chorus

3. Silky flowers, cool rain showers:
These are some things I love to feel.
Promptings, guidance, warm assurance:
That’s how I know the Spirit is real.

[Chorus]Life is o’erflowing with beautiful things
Made by our loving and glorious King.
If I but strive to be grateful and true,
I can be happy in all that I do.

Living in a university town with the ward boundaries being in close proximity to the school makes for a lot of people coming and going. It is sad to see people go, but I've learned so much over the years and been loved and served in manners that amaze me. Thank you!!!

So old

A few months ago we received a coupon in the mail for Universal Studios. I have never been and I thought this was good chance for Brandon and I to have some good "kid" fun without the kids. So we set our date and it was our first time pretending to be newlweds for THREE whole days and TWO whole nights (we've not done this long of a trip since we had kids, whoa!) We were giddy like a couple of kids. We were going to sleep in, ride the big rides, eat good, have a grand ole time. Some things went as planned and some things not so much.

The first day we decided to ride bikes cause we never do in Tallahassee for some reason. Anyway, we tried the new fancy seated bike and next time we'll stick with the traditional deal, but it was fun to try. We wore helmets cause we're out of practice....and old.

We got dinner and went to an evening session at the temple, that happens...never....we were there til closing!

The next morning we got up and got to Universal at opening time. They have a new rollercoaster that I really wanted to ride, you choose your own music but it was a two hour wait, we didn't....cause we're old. We rode a few rides that were interesting.

After lunch we were ready to head over to Islands of Adventure to get on the rollercoasters, what I had been waiting for....I said, let's do the hulk first, start off mild (can you see where this is going?). I didn't watch it once, we beelined it to the entrance and the whole time you're in line you're inside, so you don't see the ride. We get on I'm so excited and the part that goes clunk, clunk, clunk is inside as well and you can see the sky and I was thinking okay it's going to take off up there...um not, it took off early and I stopped screaming and opened my eyes fully when the ride stopped. What happened to me? I used to love rollercoasters...not anymore. I made a deal with my Father in Heaven in a very short amount of time that if I got off this one I wouldn't get on another. I did go peak at the dueling dragons cause I really wanted to go, but couldn't do it.

After I got off I watched it and said what are people thinking, those turns are so close, gracious!

So. Old.

It had to happen I suppose, but so soon?

At least Brandon is right there with me, he was done after the Hulk too. Thanks babe!

So we didn't stay at the park zooming the rides all day, instead we went and took a nap. Only appropriate right?

That night we shopped, probably at stores for old people.

All in all it was tons of fun though. So nice to be together, but one of the best parts was getting our kids back (thanks Mom!) and being a family again, I can enjoy that at any age.

Memories

Every once in a while, maybe while I'm remembering something from my childhood, I wonder what the memories of my children will be of theirs. School, our backyard, spongebob, being asked (commanded) to clean again and again, games of skipbo, seasons, Christmases, love? And more importantly what will I look like to them through adult eyes? Scary to think of, I'd like to pick and choose those please ;)! That's all I have to say about that.

Telling it like it is

* be sure to catch Laura's bday blog post below this one :)* - that couldn't wait and neither could this....

A few weeks ago the discussion in Sunday School was Joseph Smith/Book of Mormon and how you gained a testimony. I read the Book of Mormon before I joined the church and was logically converted by Joseph's story. I even had a blog entry in my head to the tune of- why would a boy of 14 'claim' to have seen Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ to be ridiculed, why would a young man bring forth false scripture to be tarred and feathered and why would a husband and father fight for a fraud, ultimately give his life and never waiver...never.

Makes sense right? But I knew I couldn't give it justice so I let it be. That same week I chatted with a friend from high school who is very involved with their religion question me about Joseph Smith and for the first time in a long time I had a chance to defend the Prophet/Book of Mormon and it strenthened my testimony.

Today, during General Conference an apostle of the Lord, Elder Holland did it justice...here it is if you missed it...

THE PARTY

so I made have a made a slight mistake in renting the Hannah Montana movie cause it's been Hannah Montana fever ever since (and she was only six and 3/4 at the time) and maybe another mistake by agreeing to that theme for the party. I felt like I was in the middle of a 13 year old's party.
They put on make-up, squealed, chased Cole, played Hannah Montana bingo, danced, ate pizza while watcing the HM concert and we finished with a pinata. I then carted a few home and Laura got to bed super late. I'm thinking we'll tone it down a bit next year.

This cake was a Laura original design that I tried to interrupt, didn't get it quite right, but she still liked it, so sweet of her ;).

Happy Birthday Laura, I hope it's a fabulous year!!!!!

I didn't, but I did

that could be applied to many aspects of my life for good or naught. This particular reference is to my third annual Women's Festival 5K. It's held in the Indianhead neighborhood, cute little area - with hills - small detail of much importance. I loved the hill factor the first year because going downhill gave me some steam. No so much the case this year.

I'm not a runner...why I've decided to take this venture up is beyond me. Until three years ago the only mile I ever ran was in high school for an ROTC requirement and I had a fierce retired Army colonel on my heels making sure I finished.

So some twenty years later, Brandon and I are on a date at a very non healthy mexican restuarant and I see a flyer advertising this race. I ask Brandon as he's rolling me to the car after dinner, you think I could do this? His response was, next year? This was two months before the race for the current year, fair question but I was still insulted and thereby determined.

I found a program called couch to 5k in two months, and thought, Hey that's me. It worked for the most part. It was a slow, painful start, but I started and kept with it. I was super nervous on race day. I ran/walked it but I finished it and I wasn't last, definitely in the bottom, but not last. I loved the atmosphere of the race, the different stories you could see.

I didn't run another race until the following year, same race, but not alone, MJ (six months prego) and MA (placed fourth in her age category- props to both) came along and that added an extra umph and I made better time.

I did the turkey trot that year as well and it was raining, but it was nice not to have the hills.

And finally to year three, great goodness, how did this get so winded? So I wasn't thinking doing the race, but my friend Rachel moved back into town and we started the couch to 5k program so I knew I needed to do this race and I really, really thought I might be able to run the whole thing. The Saturday before I ran two miles for the first time ever.

I tried psyching myself up, but I forgot about those hills, not about them all together, but their slight steepness in places, length in others and quantity.

I also ate tons of crap days before the race...go figure.

At one point as I was climbing one of the last two hills , I kept repeating... it's just a hill, it's gotta go down, it's just a hill, it's gotta go down.

cue Chariot's of Fire theme....

This hill decided it was not going down anytime soon, not high but long...I stopped chanting and one more hill after that I stopped running :(.

kill Chariot's of Fire theme.....

Bummer.

But,
cue Rocky theme....

I didn't accomplish all I wanted, I did come closer and I will continue until it's done.....

it's stated in cyberspace now so I have to live up to it.

I'm going to do the turkey trot again this year and hope for dry weather and give it my all...there are no goal threatening hills, not that I recall anyway. :)

I wanna

go foreign, I am posting this so that I remember that.

For the most part I've always thought of leaving the mother country unappealing.
Seriously, we have everything and it's all so wonderfully familiar. If you are rude or offensive at least you're aware of how to do it, for the most part. I'm afraid in a foreign land I'd leave foot tracks everywhere of appalled people.

Wait, I kind of do that now. Anyways, it all changed today when I happened up this blog....

http://thelawfamilyblog.blogspot.com/

Beautiful.

I wanna.

Now just to sell off one of the kids to get a boarding pass. They're so crazy cute I would probably just have to rent them out while I was gone :), maybe a couple cause I'd Brandon to come too.

Always good to have something to work towards, just add this one to the list!

Music

I suppose I don't love music more than many others, but it feels like I do :). I love, love, love it. Brandon's piano playing was definitely part of the draw to him for me. (deep sigh).

This past weekend we were able to go to a concert with Marvin Goldstein on piano and Jenny Oaks Baker on violin. We arrived early and were third in row..such nerds. But we could watch Marvin's hands move and that was amazing. He did a couple of medleys of hymns and then more modern lds music, both beautiful. He finished with Phantom of the Opera and my did he finish. I didn't know anything of Phantom until my early 20s and fell in love with the music. I have never the production in person, but saw the movie. Not so in love with the movie. Anyway, I wish I had a recording of Marvin's rendition to share.

Then Jenny Baker comes on with a beautiful dress and she first played my very favorite hymn, Come thou Fount. I was glad I sat close too due to the fact that there was prerecorded music that was loud and it made her playing hard to hear and her playing was very good.
Then she played a suite from one of my favorite movies, Far and Away. She also played Over the Rainbow, and All Creatures of our God and King (my kids like a hip hop version of this I have on some deseret cd). One of the very best pieces was one I had not heard before. It's from a movie called "The Mission", titled Gabriel's Oboe.....beautiful, beautiful. Maybe you had to be there, but you should try it out on youtube and see what you think. I loved it.

I left wanting to buy a violin for all of us to learn at home and anticipating the next time Brandon sat down at the piano. I'll probably put off the violin purchase for a bit, even though Jenny Baker picked it up at four, but I didn't have to wait long for Brandon. He got Phantom fever too and played a couple of pieces. (Deep sigh). Nothing like a concert at home! It wasn't Marvin Goldstein, but, for me, watching him, it was better.

Grandma and Grandpa Great

Grandpa and Grandma Great - they prefer this title over Great Grandpa/Grandma

I'm on a roll....

Last month, Susan's (Brandon's mom) siblings and parents gathered for the Adamson reunion. Part of the entrance fee was to bring a memory from childhood and a miracle from the past year. All of the Adamson "children" are great storytellers which they apparently get from their parents. Below is Susan's memory.

Some of my favorite parts are Grandpa saying, last one asleep is a rotten egg and I'm asleep already - it reminds me of something Brandon might do with the kids, if he's not too tired. And Susan remembering the touch, smell and instruction from her mom. The sheet comment recalled a memory of watching my grandma hanging clothes out and the smell good off the line sheets.

Hopefully, Cole, Laura and Hannah will someday appreciate the glimpse into the "simpler" days. Years down the road or when video games are obliterated.

Sleep Time Memories
from Sue
As you are a parent for awhile, and again as a grandparent, years later, you think about sleep differently than you did as a kid or even as a teenager.
As a child you fight going to sleep until you just can’t fight it any longer. Later you put off sleep in order to do things–usually selfish things–involving fun, but that isn’t too great a problem because when you ARE asleep you can sleep through anything and well into the next afternoon.
As the parent of a newborn you begin to crave sleep and long for a full night’s uninterrupted sleep. After a few more children arrive you become accustomed to getting by with far less sleep than you thought you needed, and it seems easier after a while. However, an afternoon nap, even just a few winks, especially when you have been working hard, is precious. You realize that sleep is a necessity.
My memory is of having a nap with Dad. He was still farming at this time, in the days when farmers really worked hard physically , and we had our large meal, dinner, at noon. Afterward, Dad would usually ask, “Who wants to have a nap with me?” Of course, none of us wanted to sleep, but we did want to be with Dad as much as we could. What kind of response he got I can’t recall, but we’d all (I think there were at least 3 of us then) go into the Master Bedroom and lie down side by side, laughing and giggling. (We were such good kids. I wonder if we all usually fell asleep and gave Mom some much needed rest time. I hope so. I can vaguely recall waking up once and seeing that Dad was gone back to work.)
In order to get the sleep he must have needed so badly, Dad would always say something like, “Last one asleep is a rotten egg.” That was followed by absolute silence as we each tried to go right to sleep or, more likely, fake it better than the others. Dad must have gotten a real chuckle out of that.
On this particular day, Dad broke the silence and his chance of getting some sleep by creating total pandemonium when he called out, “I’m asleep already!”
Thanks, Dad, for a happy childhood.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mom had ways of making bedtime pleasant, too. How many of us can remember marching off to bed to Mom’s piano rendition of “March of Norma”? And an introduction to opera, too! We always had clean sheets (smelling so fresh- off- the- clothesline good) and nightgowns (undoubtedly home sewn by Mom–Where did she ever get the time?) on Saturday nights.
Probably one of my very earliest memories is of some of us (at least two) dressed in our pajamas or nightgowns, lining up along the couch. Mama must have been tired at the end of a long day after caring for two or three little kids, but she sat on the arm of the big, maroon, overstuffed sofa, waiting, watching, as we each took our turn. I remember loving her touch and even the sweet, warm smell of her. I remember how warm and good and safe and loved I felt. What I know about the Peace and Love of God I learned first from the peace and love of Mama as I knelt at her knees and she taught me how to pray.
Eternal thanks, Mom.
Perfection
See that silly reminder post reminded me...and it's not anything grand, mainly inspired by the shoes.
We went school shopping and have a few finds that were just...perfect!
Perfect Shirt for Cole...all about gaming
Perfect shoes for Laura, and perfectly not school shoes.
And we're walking through wal-mart not looking for a backpack for Hannah. Happened upon this one and it couldn't stay hanging on the rack when it truly belonged on the back of my three year old. Talk about representin'? Perfectly.
You know us Porters, settling for nothing less than perfection!
Lists
Laura was very excited about doing school lunch shopping with me. She made lists three different times because of misplacement, each had check boxes and the desires of lunch munchies for her and Cole. She wanted just the two of us to go shopping and take care of this important responsibility.
Well yesterday was the day, cause ya know when else at this point? We had to drop something off at the church and decided to drop Cole off as well, kept Hannah, logistics just didn't pan out for a mommy/Laura shop. So we're close to a Publix (campus Publix) and I ask Laura if she wants to go to the Publix closest to us or closest to home.
I knew she'd pick closest to us, but I like change and yes I considered that FSU students were back in town, but I brushed it off.
We go in and we are in the thick of it....moms, dads, students. When I see the parents bringing their kids to school I think it's so sweet and it was, we just weren't in the mix. We were the only group with anyone under the age of 17. It was tight and Hannah's singing may have annoyed a few. Laura's basket may have hit a few people, her taking the time to check her list may have tried someone's patience.
I watched at one point as Laura checked her list, and I could see behind her a freshman and mom discussing spices. I thought of the different stage they are at in their lives and how very far away it seems and reminded myself not to rush it.
I'll be sending my babies off for a few hours tomorrow that I have trepidations about and those moms are dropping their babies off for months....with thousands of other interesting, differing, whateverelsing, very young adults.
I'll wait for that thanks.
Then we come to the end and I see another odd man (couple) out. Representin' the older generation is an elderly man and he is pulling the cart with and even more elderly gentleman who's shuffling his feet, having trouble breathing. And it seems to me that the son is helping his father shop for his groceries, (probably not for school lunch munchies). It was sweet and made me think.
I have bittersweet emotions about tomorrow's freedom for my child, I have larger issues with someday leaving her at a university/world's door and visions of further down the road, when a time comes, where Laura is taking me shopping and a hope that she will slow down for me to check my list.
Time goes by
Tomorrow marks 11 years since Brandon and I tied the knot.
I still remember - ya know cause we're so old :),
the first time we really spoke to each other - those blue eyes
the first time he brought me flowers - beautiful tulips
the first time we kissed - a typical us story
the first time he told me he loved me - took my breath away
the time we almost broke it off - not fun
getting back on track - ahhhh
Nothing like the firsts right?
While they were wonderful, they are long gone. Replaced by days, weeks, months of being married. The ups, the downs, the in betweens.
It's much more than I could've hoped for.
I love the fact that we have built a life together. How comfortable I am with him. That we helped create the most fascinating, beautiful people I know. That he leaves and comes home everyday with a kiss.
So those butterfly firsts have come and gone
but I still get
those blue eyes, the beautiful tulips (sometimes :) ), always a typical us story, my breath taken away, the not fun and then always the ahhhh.
He is the best, I couldn't have asked for more. I love that I am so in love and feel loved in return.
Happy Anniversary Sweetie!
Our Hannah nanna
turns three ....
she's been waiting for at least a month. I'm not sure she really expects anything huge to happen, but we make a big deal of it, so she figures its gotta be great.
We had a family bday party last week while Anya was still in town. I asked her who she wanted to come to her party (fullying expecting a guest list for her "friend" party...we like to party) and she listed her cousins and Aunt Carmen, Grandma, Grandaddy..and they were leaving town, so we had an impromptu get together, balloons and cupcakes...all she talked about in relation to a party.
Tomorrow she gets to go on a date with mom and dad and she wants Wendy's. When I reminded her she asked all hopefull, can I get chicken and fries annnndddd, Sprite? and of course she can. So so precious!!!! If I could bottle her up I'd make a fortune!
this past year's hi lites for her.....
loving gymnastics
surviving her siblings' swim lessons
the mountains and the mountains again
helping dad bring tomatoes from the garden
swinging and begging to swing some more
learning that she might like the water
surviving potty training (maybe)
forgetting that her belly button was her best playmate
singing, singing, singing, singing (Don't Stop Believing, Eye of the Tiger, Christmas Bells are ringing....just a few) thankfully her fave right now is Book of Mormon Stories :)
talking, talking, talking, talking, talking, talking
discovering the stove and cooking in general :O
more talking...for real
I love my Hannah nanna, might go waker her up....and maybe not
I hope it's a wonderful birthday!
Here's a pic from last year and then this year, growing growing
Static
Cole asked me for the second time of late if the tv stations go off at night. I told him that now they do not. The majority of them stay on all night, but WHEN I was growing up all of the television stations signed off around 1-2 am. The last show would air, the national anthem would play with the flag flying, the colored bars the beep then ....static. Ah good memories. It was a very nostalgic moment that gleaned how I watched too much tv growing up :).
Cole then asked why they would keep the tv on all night (pause for a moment of gratitude and appreciaiton for him not wanting it on all night) and I explained about people having different work schedules/lives, people who are in the hospital, etc. He seemed satisfied.
I'm thinking technology might be caught up enough when Cole's a teen that I could install a program that signs the tv off for the night...I know I'll need it.
I would love to have to explain why only our television signs off at night. hmmmmm the more I think about it the more I like it.
The day after Christmas in July ;)
My sweet Cole's bday is the day after Christmas and like I tell him all the time there are advantages and disadvantages to just about everything in life. For the most part he always looks on the bright side of having a birthday the day after Christmas. He likes that he gets to open more presents...he really likes presents.
This year we decided to have his "friend" party in the summer. We knew it would be a water party and I decided it would be a surprise water party......fun, fun, fun!
So today was the day. I thought maybe Cole was onto us, because he knew it was supposed to be in July and we're nearing the end, but I was able to put him off. And he was surprised. One disadvantage of having a party in the summer, for us (this is our first party in the summer) is not having a connection with the kids at school. We did have two of Cole's friends from church come, and it turned out great.
They had water gun/balloon wars, a horseshoe type game, then I found (what turned out be a huge hit at play group and Cole's party) in Family fun Magazine an erector type set where you use pvc pipe and joints and connect with the waterhose and build whatever with water coming out. Turns out it's for all ages as the pics will show.
Oh and the cake......some may say it was underdone....some may say it was overdone....some may say it was just plain heavenly (I'll go with those)! I don't know if I'll do it again, but it was great for a son who is continually begging for some KK and strawberries. Happy Surprise July Bday Cole! I loved tucking you in tonight and seeing the love and thank you in your eyes, so sweet! Can't wait to surprise you again !!!!!
Cole being surprised, blurry, but noteworthy.
Back to our trip
Working backwards now I suppose. These were the first pics in put in a collage so there.
Brandon and I honeymooned in Yellowstone almost 11 years ago and were excited to share it with the kids. Well, you know how some plans can go. The kids wanted to stay at the cabin and watch tv. The drive was too long there and even inside. I remembered loving the waterfalls so that's where we headed first. Along the way we saw a ton of buffalo, well probably a few ton.
We go to the waterfalls and a shower came down..it was already cooler than we anticipated and Cole forgot his jacket at the cabin. Well we strongly encourage him to come with us to the falls lookout and it starts raining but we trudge ahead we quickly see the falls all the while Cole is beyond miserable then as we head back to the car it begins hailing on us. We were drenched and pelted by the time we made it to the car. Two minutes later the rain was gone..for the day. Go figure. Cole didn't get out to see the lower falls. Laura my fish could have whatever happen when it comes to water and she wouldn't care. She was unfazed. Hannah was in the stroller slightly traumatized, but we survived.
We went back the 2nd day determined for the kids to see Old Faithful. It was cold and they were happy the pavement was warm, that's the crust of the visit.
We've decided to go back when they turn 21ish and can really appreciate it.
It was so beautiful. When I go back I would like to stay inside the park and have a good time seeing it all, just driving along the rivers was breathtaking.
Say
what you need to say...
Just heard that song on another blog and it reminded me of the movie "The Bucketlist".
The beginning was slow and silly, some of the language needed soap. The ending needed a box of kleenex for me and .....(don't tell) Brandon. I think for different reasons.
I loved the message that monogamy is lasting happiness.
I liked that Morgan Freeman is the narrator and (Brandon pointed out) for more reasons than just to here his voice.
My favorites on the list were
'kiss the most beautiful girl in the world'
'laugh till you cry'
'witness something truly majestic'
Won't say too much more because you should see it for yourself.
If you'd care not too take the time, spend the time you would have loving your family and living life to it's fullest - which is kind of one in the same.
D Day
I enjoy Father's day, for the most part. I like boys/men, ya know in general - one in particular more than the rest. I am not a fan of male bashing. I suppose some of them deserve it, but I believe they're just trying to get along like us gals. Everyone's got their pros and cons and the fact is we couldn't get along without them.
I have a variety of "dads" in my life...
my father who instilled in me the importance of education, being fit and strong and a certain amount of discipline.
Daddy G., father #2, who helped raise me and set such a great example of being a kind husband, father and that men could/should help around the house and with the kids.
Frank, my stepfather, who is an excellent grandaddy, with so much energy and thirst for knowledge and one best of alls was he so generously was my pathway to the Big Apple, twice...a dream fulfilled.
Rhoud, father n law, one of the hardest working people I know. Was such a good father to Brandon that it seeps out of him.
Brandon, father of my babies, I couldn't have asked for a better dad to help me raise my children. The kids adore him. He is an excellent teacher and I am amazed and fall in love all over gain when I watch him with them.
Cole, the father to be I am raising, I don't often give this much consideration, but he has a gentle heart and is so incredibly smart, I know he will be a great dad like his own.
My Father in Heaven, I know that He lives. I know that He loves me. I have had experiences in my life in which His hand was undeniable. He. Is. There.
Cole gave Brandon a drawing for father's day that is a picture of him getting married in the temple. What a gift to give. I've thought of this throughout the day. How as a parent to want the peace the blessings of the temple bring and felt maybe a little of the hopes Heavenly Father has for us and what a gift it would be for me to continue to set my focus on the temple,attend often, and do what I can to help Cole fulfill his gift to his dad.
Happy Father's Day!
Kids Art, Baby Bedding, Nursery Decor
Here's a new website to check out. Lots of cute baby decor. Here's a message from the designer...
"Hey Guys! My new website is finally done and live. I have all my art for kids listed on there as well as other items for kids and babies from other companies and artists. Take a look and let me know what you think. I search the internet for unique and cute stuff for kids and I’m adding products daily.
I am trying to get the word out so if you blog please consider adding a link to my site…if that's okay, can you list the site name as "Kids Art, Baby Bedding, Nursery Decor" and then link it to www.LondonBridgeChildren.com. I'm trying to get linked to as many blogs as I can. If you have any friends that blog let them know that if they will add my link to their blog then I will send them a free 8x10" art print from my website (and they can pass that offer on to their friends…you can just forward this to them). Just have them email me if they are interested. And, of course I want you to pick out an 8x10" art print for helping me out…thank you so much!"
Our guest Sarah
When Brandon got home this afternoon, we discovered that our Laura had replaced herself with a guest by the name of Sarah. She had been invited by Cole and Laura and would be staying the night. She stayed in character most of the evening. Here are some things about Sarah....
her family begs her to dress immodestly, which is why she was at our dinner table still wearing her swimsuit.
Her family only eats dinner in the living room while watching tv(which happens here only occastionally, we're so unfortunate).
You don't have to wait for dessert at her house.
They do have salad and other things for dinner.
For Family Home Evening they have prayer and then sing a song
Back to the Laura's family...we had lemon poppyseed muffins for dessert and Cole asked for seconds and I told him to split it with Laura/Sarah.
An hour later Laura was back with our family and we were glad because we missed her. She walks over to the muffins and asks for another and I asked if Cole didn't share a second one with her?
Very Seriously the response was,
No, that was Sarah.
Wydahotana
That's what Brandon's coworkers call where he's from, cause it's somewhere out there amongst those western states. We had a good time, experiences all kinds of weather. LOTS of pics, the task seems daunting to blog about it all....I'm going to give it a shot! Well mostly pics with a few comments where necessary. Here goes!
First stop SLC, UT
Susan picked us up then we headed to Temple Square and met up with our wonderful babysitter Miss Kristine, who's hanging out there for the summer and two missionaries who served in Tally but are home now, James Costello and Brady Nielsen. They were fun to hang with, the kids enjoyed their youthful energy...
We had a picnic lunch that Susan made for us, yummy. Then we headed to the north visitor's center and saw cool paintings and the Christus, then watched a video that moved you to different rooms that were decorated for different stages in life, it was about families being together forever (very well done).
We went back to temple sqaure the next day, Joseph Smith memorial building, conference center and headed north to Ogden to have lunch with Brandon's Aunt Barbara. We made it to Pocatello in time to eat at Tastee Treet...yummy.
It was good to see everyone again.
and due to picture editing issues we'll add more later :)
Pansy
I realized in the middle of the funeral that I was still wearing my leather work gloves. I considered taking them off out of respect, but decided to leave them on: the cat and I had a working relationship anyway.
You don't have to go all the way to Idaho to find a farm like the one I grew up on--that's part of what I like about Tallahassee. It wasn't a real farm by farm standards, but it was a farm by city standards. We had cattle and hogs and sometimes chickens, a horse for a short while, sheep one summer, and always cats and dogs. People from town, either out of laziness or some misguided sense of what it is to be humane, dropped off domesticated animals "in the country" (we were only five minutes from the edge of town) when they were finished with them.
We had a complex relationship with our animals. Some people, then and now, shout objections to raising animals for slaughter. On our place at least, the animals were treated well, even through their final moments. No human being ate dinner until the animals were fed and otherwise cared for. Our entire schedules were built around the animals' needs. We fed the babies with bottles when necessary, took animals of all sizes to the vet, administered medicines, delivered babies. I was always pleased at how a days-old calf, with its legs folded under itself, fit perfectly across my chest, head resting in the cradle created by my bicep and deltoid, butt hanging over the same place on the other arm.
At the same time, no animal was ever allowed in the house. No matter how cold. Animals are smart, and, more important, built tough. They found shelter from wind and rain and snow and worse, and they were just fine. The house was for the people and the people alone.
Eventually, they all came to the same end. Even as a child I understood this. Every beast--whether loved or hated or simply tended, pet or pest or product--came to the same end. Sparky the little mutt was hit by a car and got a burial service--the first of many. The wild dogs that chased the cattle were shot. Pigs and chickens were slaughtered at home; the cattle usually were trucked elsewhere. One calf literally died in my arms as I was trying to get him to the vet. I watched a cow slaughtered and carved up, plucked many a still-twitching headless chicken, and assisted in converting many a hog to ham. And yes, sometimes we put down animals in poor health, including our horse. I hunted deer and game birds. I hauled dead animals to the landfill. None of it really bothered me--it was just the way it was.
Tiger the family cat broke all those rules. I didn't want a cat. I don't really even like cats. But his owner promised that he was a good hunter, and I had a mole problem. Similarly, I had a family problem: Jennifer and the kids all wanted him. Tiger came home with us.
How it irked me, having an ANIMAL in the HOUSE! On the couch, on the bed, coming in, going out, coming in again. But I came to appreciate that Tiger wasn't just any cat. He had no disillusions about owning the place, no feline sense of entitlement, no haughty attitude. He didn't even insist on being underfoot until you gave him what he was after. He just wanted a soft place to rest and some food that he didn't have to chase. And that cat brought me at least a mole a week.
I knew he was sick when he rubbed up against my shins, looking for attention. He hadn't even begun losing weight yet, but he'd never acted like that. By that point I loved him too, and was actually glad for the chance to rub and scratch him. Two weeks later I was digging a hole in the back yard, my leather gloves saving my once-tough hands from blisters--I've become a genuine pansy. Choking out for my children an explanation of sickness and death, I found that everything I learned on the farm seemed just as distant as Idaho herself.
Jennifer and the kids seem just fine now, and I'm glad for them. We don't have to buy cat food, and the mole population hasn't recovered yet. I just wish I could quit expecting Tiger to dart past me every morning when I open the door to leave for work.
Laura's Heart
she's a pretty tough cookie, give her a job to do and if she's interested in getting it done, it will get done, no matter the obstacle. She gives me a run for my money at least once a day. She knows what she wants.
She's not much of a people person. For the most part she'd be happy in a room by herself.
She has a tender heart. Ever since she was way little she would pay attention to the expression on people's face in books we would read and ask if they were sad, or point out the emotion and then ask why, with real concern. If her siblings are having a hard time (and she isn't having a hard time herself) she tries to help them out somehow.
Today she and I were headed to Walmart and I saw ahead of us a hitchhiker at the on ramp of I-10 and we had a red light. I could tell she was going to ask.
Is he waiting for the bus?
No. (then I tried to give the six yr old version of what he was doing)
He doesn't have a car?
He doesn't have a place to live?
I said most likely not.
What does he do if it rains (cause it was about to)
Get wet.
After some thought
well I hope he has an umbrella and some food
It may be hard to get it through just reading about it, but the concern and thoughtfulness in her voice were heavenly.
I am so amazed by her. I think I've put on here before a quote I found, from a mother describing her daughter, who had passed away. It perfectly describes her for me.....so here it is again......
" she was like a gale force hurricane wind ripping through your life and other times she was a gentle delicate breeze on your cheek"
I hope I am showing her how much I admire, adore and appreciate who she is. She has a strong will, and independent spirit, a decisive mind and she has a tender heart.
My Hannah Sings
all. the. time.
Well, mostly when we're in the van and she's bored, or in a store. It happens so much in the grocery store and walmart that I don't realize she's doing it and approach people (who have been listening to it for two or more aisles) and they're smiling at me and it takes a minute to realize they're appreciating her singing. It is sweet.
My first two kids were not like this so it's also kind of odd. But I love it and really really hope she's developing those vocal chords so that she can sing in a way that I've always wished I could. No pressure though. I've only thought about voice lessons, I haven't even looked into it yet.....but I will.
Her favorites are Love is Spoken Here, If the Savior stood beside me, Happy Birthday Anya (her cousin), a mixture of the first two and she has some originals she's working on.
I love her and the fact that she loves music and singing.
I have hopes of getting it on film and putting here in the future. Stay tuned!
Mother's Day
Yesterday Brandon and the kids brought me tulips (my favorite!) and two bags of powdered donuts, Brandon said they had a hard time distinguishing between the things they wanted and what I might want, so I guess they found a happy medium. Do you know those sweet kids helped me open both bags of those donuts when they gave them to me? ...
I'm tearing up.
I got to take a nap and then Laura and I went short/skirt shopping for her. We could of done better there, but then we ran by Wendy's for her and she took me to Osaka for Mother's day (Brandon is not fond of the place, so we don't go there and I usually love it although trying to eat healthier makes all that oil less appealing). Laura said she enjoyed eating with me, but not watching the guys cook.
This morning Brandon and the kids made me breakfast for a queen and everyone ate on the bed with me, sort of, it was fun. Then the kids brought me the crafts they made while Brandon made breakfast.
Hannah did some cutting and was so proud...
and Laura made me some 'heads', this is my favorite b/c of the button on it
My son.......
He brings me coupons that he made...all on his own, a free hug, a free kiss, 20 minutes of just you and me time (one of my faves). Then I come to 'some money', and he's there holding a hand full of dimes, my jaw drops. Cole's love affair with money is well I'm speechless, it's huge. So I looked at him and said Cole you're giving me money? For real? He smiled big and said yes.
I teared up.
I moved on to other coupons and was still stumped about the money so I asked Cole are you really giving me your money? He said no, Laura gave me some of her money so I could give it to you (Laura is much like her mother and cares very little about money until it poofs into something worthwhile :) ). Life began to make more sense again, everything was as it should be... sort of.
I said Cole why didn't you give me your money...Cole says, because I'm saving it and didn't want to waste it, besides I think it's all in savings.
There was probably a teaching moment here, but I didn't take it.
Another coupon was "anything built out of legos". Cole kept asking what I wanted built, "mom, don't you want to turn in one of your coupons? What do you want built?"
I told him I didn't know yet and finally after church he said mom have you decided and I said well, I was thinking of an ice cream cone (go figure). He said, oh so casually and sincerely....oh I was thinking of a temple...we're going with Cole's suggestion, I'm left wondering who is raising this kid....oh yeah, Brandon.
Sacrament meeting.......
Today I'm sure I asked the kids to be reverent during sacrament. As some point I may have noticed Cole being very quiet, not really doing anything. I thought something may have been wrong with him, but figured I'd let it stew silently until after Sacrament meeting, no sense in rocking the boat. By the end of the meeting Laura has ended up in Brandon's lap on the stand and I have to go out with Hannah to potty. So Cole was left to fend for himself.
Cut to the parking lot and I notice a friend of mine who we usually end up sitting behind in Sacrament meeting is leaving and stops her vehicle just behind ours and is coming to talk to me. She says I don't know what you are doing in raising the kids but you're a great mom (okay who doesn't want to hear this stuff on Mother's day, but I'm puzzled still, oh yeah and did I mention Brandon's raising them/me). She explains they were sitting there singing the closing hymn and she looked back and there's Cole sitting by himself with his little hymnal singing the closing song. She gave us kudos and I thought how nice for Cole and me that there wasn't a different ending to that story.
So on the way home I'm telling everyone what Sister Torgesen told me, to give Cole full benefit. And he says, yeah I made a promise to myself that for Mother's day I would be good during Sacramnet meeting and listen and sing all the songs. ............................... he continued, yeah, Hannah pulled out some books that I really wanted to read, but I remember I promised myself so I didn't read them.
I tear up every time I think of it.
I really appreciate that he thought enough to make this commitment for me. The best part is that he made a promise to himself and even when it came down to being difficult he kept the promise. I am still in awe. I realize it's not the end all be all and we hope that all children learn this self mastery, but the kid's eight and I can't say that I keep many promises I make to myself. Could a mother ask for a better gift on mother's day? I couldn't. Thank you Cole.
Laura looked kind of forlorn (I love when she gives these looks, hard to describe but so precious) after Cole told us this and I was praising him, so I told her...when you're eight you can give that to me for mother's day too.
So this afternoon we went to mom's and got to spend good time with her while Frank and Brandon took the kids for a hike.
Then we came home and I got to spend time with my hubby.
It was a great mother's day.
No tears, just smiles, I have a great life!
You're never going to believe it!
Well, you probably will....
In cub scouts on of the achievement thingees in Duty to God is to tell two way that you can practice your religion and then do them. So Cole and I were driving along somewhere and he decided the two would be fasting and testimony. He didn't get that the testimony went with the fasting (he'd done that before...for one meal). So on Sunday I was talking to him about it and he said nu uh. I said he could testify to our family at home but he needed to bear his testimony as part of the practicing.
So sacrament meeting I'm trying to encourage him, in my mind because I dont' want him to be afraid of it, or as afraid or realize everyone's afraid but that he was strong enough to concur this. So I mentioned he could sit with Brandon on the stand if he went up (only a little twinge of guilt for this). He kept talking about it and I said it was okay to just do it at home, he said he wanted to but there were so many people. I tried to assure him that he didn't have to go up, he wanted to sit with daddy, but evidently Brandon had already told him he couldn't go up, but I said if he bore his testimony we could ratify that, but only under those circumstances. Good stuff for Cole's therapy later.
So Hannah's potty training and I tell Cole that we have to go out to potty and he can think about it and decide after I get back.
That's right folks, I missed my son's first testimony in church. Apparently there was only one person too many in the room. Serves me right.
He really didn't mean to he said he just decided to go (probably cause he didn't have anyone to debate it with) and that the people went fast in front of him. Brandon said he stood beside him with is hand on his shoulder and Cole said the basics, very quickly.
Brandon said the reason he didn't want Cole sitting with him was b/c he was having to raise and lower the podium and was needing to concentrate but he did give him snuggle love time right after he bore his testimony and let him sit with hime for a minute. That's our defense for future therapy.
I just can't believe it all went down that way, can you?
Stuff
On Tuesday Cole received his bob cat award from his den leader Sister Hair. He is loving doing all the scout stuff. He has his mother's competitive nature. When his friend David got two beads he wanted to know how he could get them and has been working hard and I have been working hard to remind and help him, we're a great team ;).
Mom offered to have the kids come spend the night, so Brandon and I went to Cabo's for yummy yummy burritos and then to Sam's to stock up on some food storage and said we'd spend the day today organizing our laundry/food storage room, that looked like a poster child for such rooms. We dowloaded 'Don't Stop Believing' for Rock band and jammed like young people and quickly crached like old people, it was like 11:00, some rockers we are.
Yesterday and today I have awakned at 4:15am and not been able to get back to sleep, this is not like me, so today I tried to stay in bed because I was planning on and was registered to run in a 5k., I really want to know if I've gotten better since going to the gym.
I already had sore throat so I was debating about going. Alas I got up at 5:00 because it wasn't working and I knew I wanted to do more in the laundry room than just organize. So I started and created a huge mess by moving everything around, but realized that I could paint the depressing brown paneling walls during this. So I found my favorite green color in the shed and went to work. And decided with the painting decision I would be running a different race today.
Brandon got up at 8:00 and was oh so pleased to know that I was up to my antics...love you babe. He handled it graciously, helping get a shelf down that's services were no longer needed. He then went about his plans for the day. We did get back together to reorganize our food storage. The laundry room may look weak, but the precious few that saw the before are appreciating the after....organization is my weakest link. Here's a pic of some of the progress.
so we went to Bianca's to have a calzone because riccardo's wasn't open and just for you Tallahasseans, never settle for Bianca's..wait for Riccardo's.
We picked up the kids and being the good parents we are brought them back home, fed, bathed, scriptured and then ....
that's right folks, the Porter kids played rock band!!!!!!!!!!!!! They loved it a little too much, I'm only feeling slightly guilty about that, it was only Eye of the Tiger...rising up.....
So one more family milestone. Two days ago, I told my sister I wasn't going to try to potty train Hannah until after our trip to Idaho. Not two hours later Hannah is asking to wear panties and I thought well if she asking I probably ought to pay attention. She's pretty much worn panties since and had one accident. She went at Cole's school, grandma's. She went by herself with no one telling her to go I just found her looking for toilet paper. Laura is to credit for this I think, she's been working with her. So of course I'm having day dreams about not buying more diapers, this being it, but I keep telling myself...you just wait until she realizes how much power she has here. She insisted on wearing her panties to bed..... I'll keep you posted.
